Helpful Tips for Emergencies

When an emergency has occurred, call us immediately so we can begin formal treatment as soon as possible. Here are some tips that you can use as temporary actions before you arrive at our office.

shutterstock_159253544Loose Crown: If you have a dental crown that detaches, try to carefully slip it back on with dental cement purchased over the counter. If this doesn’t work to hold the crown in place, or you have no opportunity to try, bring the crown with you to our office.

Lost filling: Temporarily seal the exposed cavity using some over-the-counter dental cement.

Toothache: Rinse your mouth out with warm water. Use dental floss to gently remove any food particles stuck between your teeth. Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Don’t put any aspirin on your gums or on the tooth, as it may burn your gums. Take over-the-counter pain reliever as needed and call us at 210‑660‑5022 to make an appointment immediately. If symptoms worsen, go to an emergency room.

Dental abscess: To alleviate the pain and help draw the infection to the surface, rinse your mouth with a mixture of ½ teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water. Repeat this several times a day. Take over-the-counter pain reliever as needed and call us at 210‑660‑5022 to make an appointment immediately. If symptoms worsen, go to an emergency room.
